Help us find incidents faster by using what3words

After successful piloting, we’re pleased to be using what3words to respond to incidents. It’s a simple way to describe exactly where help is needed using just three words.

Emergencies can happen anywhere, from an incident at a remote hiking location to an accident on the side of a highway. But identifying precisely where help is needed can be near impossible if you’re in an area with no address or if that address covers a large area. For example, ZIP codes can apply to areas over one square mile. In rural locations like farms, beaches, coastline or moorland, it’s even more difficult to communicate location accurately.

what3words addresses are more accurate than ZIP codes. When you share an incident’s what3words address with us, we can quickly identify its exact location and send life-saving resources to exactly where they’re needed.

What is what3words?

what3words has divided the world into 10ft squares and given each square a unique combination of three words: a what3words address. For example, ///narrate.optical.carry will take you to Arizona’s Horseshoe Bend overlook of the Colorado River. It’s free to use the online map at what3words.com or download the app for iOS and Android. The system works offline, making it ideal for use in areas with an unreliable data connection. what3words addresses cover the entire world and can be used in over 50 languages.

To give a what3words address in an emergency:

1. Download the free what3words app: https://app.what3words.com/us
2. Open the app and wait for the blue dot to stabilize, then tap the current location icon.
3. The what3words address for the location of the emergency will be displayed at the top of the screen. Read out the three words to your emergency call taker. For example, if you’re at ///chill.closing.washed simply say: ‘The emergency is at chill closing washed.’
4. The emergency service will use the what3words address to see exactly where you are and send help.

Always be prepared and download the free what3words app.
